Chapter 569 569: Champion Selection (Part 3)
Chapter 569 569: Champion Selection (Part 3)
"You didn't notice?" Padma rolled her eyes at him and said irritably, "Mantra didn't send any girls."
The group looked around and realized it was true—among all the schools, this was the only one with no female representatives.
"Mantra didn't accept girls?" Michael asked.
"How could that be? Magical ability has nothing to do with gender," Padma said angrily. "Only people would do something like this! Just because of gender, some people never even get a fair chance!"
"How can that be?" Michael frowned. "Everyone should be free to grow, and have equal opportunities to show their talents—not be told what they can or can't do just because of their gender."
"Exactly, that's it." Padma's eyes lit up. She glanced at Michael, then looked down shyly and muttered, "Good thing I came to Hogwarts."
"Al-Qadim's Champion —"
[TN: Changed Akhetim to Al-Qadim ]
While the two were talking, Dumbledore had already received the next names.
"Zaid Al-Faris!"
A boy with black curly hair walked straight toward the small room.
"Layla bint Rashid!"
A girl with long dark brown hair stood up. Her amber eyes swept across the room before she walked forward.
"Rahma Abu Ali!"
This was a boy with particularly prominent cheekbones. He silently walked down the aisle.
"Only one school left!" Anthony clenched his fists unconsciously and blurted out the obvious.
Michael started tapping the table again and shook his leg as he mumbled something under his breath.
The great hall suddenly fell silent. Everyone nearly forgot to applaud Rahma, their eyes fixed on the Goblet of Fire as it returned to its bluish-white flame.
Then, the flames turned red. A tongue of fire shot high into the air, and a piece of parchment was ejected from the tip.
Dumbledore reached out to catch it. After glancing at it, a faint smile appeared on his face.
He looked up and announced:
"Hogwarts' Champion—Wade Grey!"
"Wade, it's you! It's YOU! I knew it!"
The cheers from Ravenclaw were deafening. Michael slammed the table with loud "bang bangs"s, and Anthony immediately stood up, pulled Wade to his feet, gave him a strong hug, and shouted joyfully, "This is awesome!"
Even students from the other houses joined in the celebration. Dumbledore had to loudly shout "Quiet!" twice before the hall calmed down enough for him to announce the second name.
"Cedric Diggory!"
"Boom—!"
Hufflepuff erupted with even louder screams and applause, like they were trying to outdo the earlier celebration. Many students jumped up and down, screamed, stomped, and even looked ready to leap onto the tables.
Cedric stood up with a radiant smile, hugging and high-fiving everyone around him.
At that moment, Dumbledore received the third name. His smile faltered slightly. He cleared his throat and shouted:
"Harry Potter!"
Harry's face lit up with shock and joy—he was nearly swallowed by the crowd. Gryffindor absolutely exploded. The cheers rose in wave after wave, and with the thunderous applause, it felt like the entire Great Hall had blown up.
Slytherin, the only house without a single warrior selected, remained unusually silent. Some students who had been clapping hesitated under the gazes of others and slowly lowered their hands.
Once the noise had fully died down, Dumbledore raised his palm and made a pressing gesture. The Great Hall gradually quieted.
"All right, I understand your excitement," he said. "But now, please give our champions some space—Mr. Bagman and Mr. Crouch have a few things to discuss with them regarding the tournament."
Cheers rippled through the hall as the three newly selected champions finally escaped the sea of hugs and handshakes. While straightening their rumpled robes, they quickly made their way toward the small room.
Wade felt as though all eyes were fixed on their backs. Even if most of those gazes weren't hostile, the sensation of being watched by so many people was still like pins against his skin.
They passed through the door into a smaller room at the back. Wizard portraits lined both walls. The champions who had already been selected were scattered around the room—some sitting by the fireplace, some standing against the wall, and others quietly chatting with their companions.
As the three entered, everyone inside turned to look at them. Then, Fleur Delacour raised her eyebrows, glanced at the 13-year-old girl from Mahoutokoro, Chinatsu Asada, and said:
"Oh~ two more children."
There was no real malice in her words, but her tone carried an undeniable arrogance and a hint of frivolity.
Wade/Harry: "..."
What a pity—such a beautiful face!
Moments later, the Great Hall behind them suddenly grew noisy again—it sounded like dinner had ended and the students were leaving.
Not long after, the door opened once more, and the two Ministry of Magic officials entered the room.
Bagman walked as though he had springs in his shoes, his face full of cheer, while Crouch looked tired and weary, as if he'd rather be anywhere else.
"Wonderful, wonderful! All the champions have been selected," Bagman announced loudly. "That means that among the students who signed up at each of your schools, you are the top three!"
"I... I'm one of them too...?"
Harry muttered silently to himself, a dreamlike look on his face, as if he still hadn't fully processed the fact that he'd really been chosen as a champion.
Of course, he had imagined this moment before. But he knew he wasn't Wade—there were still so many outstanding students at Hogwarts... especially the sixth- and seventh-years, who mastered all kinds of powerful spells...
Even Fred and George—Harry couldn't even claim to be better than them.
Harry's mind was echoing with all sorts of chaotic thoughts, and in a daze, he heard Bagman's next words—
"You are all bound by a magical contract. Anyone chosen by the Goblet of Fire must compete in this tournament—but that doesn't mean you'll all make it to the end…"
"What does that mean?" Viktor Krum's thick eyebrows furrowed slightly. "Someone will be eliminated from the tournament?"
"Exactly. New participating schools, new champions, new rules," Bagman said cheerfully, stroking his chin. "This time, we're using an elimination system. Only sixteen of you will move on to the second round."
Everyone's expressions instantly turned tense.
In previous Triwizard Tournaments, no matter what the results of the earlier tasks were, all three champions from each school continued competing to the end. Everyone had a chance to stage a comeback.
But in this tournament, clearly… everyone only had one chance. After the first task, it was entirely possible that all three champions from a single school might be eliminated.
They didn't even want to imagine what kind of backlash they'd face upon returning home if that happened.
The air seemed to freeze in an instant. The once faintly noisy room fell into complete silence, as a heavy pressure settled over everyone present.
