Chapter 1326: Third-Party Gunfire

Chapter 1326: Third-Party Gunfire

Ye Fan and his team, divided into three groups, lay in ambush outside the village, each group in sight of the other, focusing on blocking the road leading out of the forest. As for the direction deep into the forest, there was no defense at all. If Black Shark really dared to return the way they came into the forest, Ye Fan and the others would be completely relieved, with nothing to worry about. With some time, they could eliminate Black Shark.

At this moment, attacking the village would be the best opportunity to eliminate Black Shark and his men.

However, Ye Fan did not make such a decision. Looking at those innocent villagers being used as shields, he had to suppress his intent to kill for the time being.

No matter how many villagers were killed or injured, it was all Black Shark’s doing. Ye Fan didn’t want to be associated with it.

So, he had to stop the attack temporarily, even if all the villagers died at Black Shark’s hands, that was the way it had to be.

Ye Fan held firm to one principle: as long as he wasn’t the murderer himself, as long as it wasn’t his actions inciting Black Shark to kill, nothing else needed to be considered.

If he really cared, it would be too much to handle anyway.

Toward the plight of these villagers, Ye Fan could only offer his sympathy; there wasn’t anything else useful he could do to help.

If they attacked, it would only accelerate the death of these villagers, who had already lost their freedom and been tied up.

Near the village, the terrain was open, and the mercenaries watched vigilantly with hostility, making the possibility of rescuing the villagers extremely slim.

Furthermore, in his role as an assassin, Ye Fan, now known as Peng Bird, couldn’t do anything that would expose his identity.

Black Shark had already anticipated that the enemy would definitely set an ambush on his retreat route, and there was no other way about it. Nothing would make him go back into the forest, so he had decided to head to the location Hawk had pointed out. That was his hope for survival; aside from that, he really couldn’t find any other hope for survival.

As Ye Fan and his team lay in wait for their ambush target.

While Black Shark and his men had not yet retreated.

Suddenly, a sharp gunshot rang out abruptly from behind the village.

A bullet flew through the air, directly heading towards the house where Black Shark and his men were hiding.

The bullet pierced through the void, shot through the window, and directly hit a mercenary in the neck.

The shot mercenary fell to the ground, blood gushing out, and his life quickly fading.

"Hide, all of you hide well, don’t expose yourselves and give the enemy a chance to snipe," Black Shark said furiously.

The shot mercenary seemed beyond saving, and Black Shark and his men could only watch coldly as a comrade died miserably before their eyes.

In a moment, everyone in the house hid well, not giving the outside killers a chance to attack.

"Damn it, how could this happen?" Mahavi said anxiously. "The opponent dares to shoot! Are they fearless of us killing these innocent villagers? Isn’t Peng Bird not fond of using innocent lives to establish his mission? It seems the rumors are indeed unreliable; Peng Bird wouldn’t care about the lives and deaths of these villagers. Killing us is their primary goal."

"Isn’t it naive to say such things to a group of assassins?" Black Shark said irritably.

"I..." Mahavi was rendered speechless.

"That shot just now wasn’t necessarily fired by Peng Bird and his team," Black Shark said calmly.

"What do you mean by that?" Mahavi asked, puzzled.

Black Shark explained, "Peng Bird and their sniper rifles are all about silently eliminating us. When have you ever heard their guns produce such a poor gunshot sound? It is quite apparent that this was a hunter’s gun that killed one of us, and the hunter is hiding not far from us. If I am not mistaken, it should be the hunter from this village."

"Black Shark Sir, your analysis makes sense, but what should we do now?" Mahavi asked. "With Peng Bird and now the village’s hunter, our enemies have increased, making our situation even more perilous."

"The hunter is of no concern; it’s really Peng Bird and his people who are the real threat," Black Shark contemplated.

"Should we shoot some of the peasants outside to intimidate the opponent?" Mahavi suggested.

"It won’t have any effect; who do you want to intimidate?" Black Shark replied helplessly. "Intimidating Peng Bird and his team is nonsense. They won’t care, and it’s even less relevant to intimidate the hunter. These villagers have long suffered from us and others, harboring deep resentment. They’ve already got nothing to lose, and given any opportunity, they’ll take revenge on us ruthlessly. They won’t care about anyone else’s life and death. Even if it were their relatives, they’d think of ways to kill us rather than save them, because they’ve learned from repeated lessons that they can’t trust us. The cost of compromise is death."

This is the belief held by the villages or tribes thriving in the jungle.

Not only do they deal with mercenaries, but also with drug dealers and even the local government. Years of accumulated hatred are profound, and for hunters surviving in the forest, eradicating those who invade their homeland is a steadfast truth.

Although it demands unimaginable sacrifices, there’s really no other choice.

"Are we supposed to let just a mere hunter act arrogantly in front of us?" Mahavi said, quite agitated.

"I’ve been to this village a few times; they don’t have the capability to resist with force. That hidden hunter is likely the only one in the village with any combat capability. Just ignore it," Black Shark said nonchalantly. "There’s no need to waste bullets killing more villagers. We’ve already killed some to show them our terror. Letting these villagers live on in misery as our resources and rest bases when needed is enough."

"Brilliant, still Black Shark Sir has the experience," Mahavi said with a smile. "It’s like keeping livestock; as long as we operate in these forests, they have value for us, life and death completely in our control."

Mahavi was pleased, realizing that sparing these villagers would facilitate future operations.

"We can’t stay long. We must leave here and find a chance to escape," Black Shark said steadily.

"Although it’s dangerous outside, with dense forests and mountain terrain as cover, if we slip into the woods, we’ll have more room to maneuver," Mahavi said grimly. "Not a fear of enemy pursuits."

"Prepare yourselves, then retreat immediately," Black Shark ordered. "You’ll lead everyone in resistance. If any enemy appears, find a way to stall them; I’ll escape alone; it’s easier for me that way. Whether we survive depends on our own fate this time."
