Chapter 13 Extracurricular Books
Chapter 13 Extracurricular Books
Is this guy an idiot?
Chen Mu had never thought about it so seriously before.
While taking inventory, they discovered that she bought two bottles of dark soy sauce instead of scallions, and large scallions instead of small ones. There was also a huge bag of potatoes, weighing dozens of kilograms, probably stockpiling for apocalypse. Even more absurdly, the list clearly stated ginger, but she bought a bag of sand ginger; it said cooking wine, but she bought Shaoxing wine instead…
Chen Mu even doubted whether what he was writing was actually Chinese characters.
"I thought you were a top student."
He laughed in exasperation, and his tone became quite blunt, "When I first met you, weren't you reading a book on the street?"
"Haha, those are extracurricular books. Who would read textbooks outside of school? That's so stupid."
Lin Chaojing waved his hand with a smile, as if he felt he had successfully completed his mission.
She really has no common sense about life and probably has never been to a farmers market, so she just buys whatever looks good to her.
They were coaxed by the vendors and ended up bringing back a bunch of ingredients they didn't need at all.
"Go again, or I'll go."
Chen Mu had no choice but to make the shopping list more detailed, including the types and quantities of items, and even simple line drawings to show what they looked like.
After much effort, Lin Chaojing finally managed to purchase all the items without any further problems.
Chen Mu took the opportunity to observe and saw the girl calmly carrying several bags of rice and several buckets of cooking oil back, with many other things hanging on her back, the load being comparable to that of a forklift.
It seems that magical girls, regardless of their magic, also possess formidable physical strength... a surprise attack by force probably won't work.
"Alright, now watch me show you what I've got."
Chen Mu rolled up his sleeves and went into the kitchen.
Actually, he had considered methods like "drugming," but firstly, poison was hard to obtain, and secondly, he didn't know the extent of the magical girl's drug resistance. He also had to eat these meals himself, and if he were discovered, he would end up losing more than he gained. So, he simply cooked some normal food.
A plate of glossy, fragrant scallion-oil chicken, a stir-fried vegetable dish, and a steaming pot of tofu and fish head soup with a milky white broth.
With the addition of white rice in front of them, the aroma of the food instantly filled the room.
Lin Chaojing sat at the dining table, curiously poking the scallion chicken in front of him with his chopsticks, and then carefully picked up a piece and put it in his mouth.
She chewed twice, then stopped.
Then, her beautiful eyes suddenly widened, sparkling with surprise.
"Delicious!" She almost immediately grabbed another large piece, her cheeks bulging, and exclaimed indistinctly, "Delicious!"
"Aren't there any other adjectives...?"
Chen Mu also picked up his chopsticks.
Having lived alone for many years, his cooking skills are indeed quite good. While he might not be good enough to open a restaurant, he can at least cook ordinary home-style dishes without any problems.
Having worked as a delivery driver for so long and witnessed many of the "underground practices" in restaurants, he was even less inclined to order takeout.
Lin Chaojing devoured the dishes in a flash, then gave him a thumbs up.
"From now on, you'll be cooking."
From that day on, Chen Mu's status in the family rose, from "pet" to "nanny".
Because he controlled the food supply, his freedom of action was increased and there were fewer restrictions. Basically, he could do anything except "go out" and "use his mobile phone".
Lin Chaojing is indeed a little rich woman. She would bring back particularly expensive ingredients from time to time, leaving Chen Mu unsure of what to do with them.
They don't skimp on food at all. Could it be that being a magical girl is really that lucrative? Well, it's a job where you risk your life fighting, so it's not hard to understand.
Although I've never seen her fight monsters.
In any case, Chen Mu thoroughly satisfied his appetite here, eating foods he had never enjoyed since birth. His sleeping environment also changed from that dark and cramped wardrobe to having access to another room, his own bed, a soft and clean mattress and blanket, so he no longer had to curl up in bed.
"That's good. I'll slowly build up her favorability and gradually gain her trust."
Chen Mu silently calculated in his heart that what he needed now was to be patient and bide his time, waiting for the right opportunity to arrive:
"Give me a chance, and I'll escape!"
...
That morning, Chen Mu woke up naturally, and after a quick wash, he prepared to make breakfast.
"Let's cook some noodles..."
As he was thinking this, he discovered an unexpected scene.
Lin Chaojing had actually gotten up even earlier than him and was sitting by the window on his balcony at home, in a wobbly armchair.
"Am I hallucinating?" Chen Mu rubbed his eyes and looked at the clock on the wall; it was only six in the morning.
At that moment, the warm, pale golden sunlight streamed obliquely through the glass window. The light fell precisely on Lin Chaojing's profile and shoulder, making her snow-white skin appear almost translucent, and revealing a layer of extremely fine, soft golden down along the edges of her cheeks. She wasn't dozing off; she was turning the pages of a book.
She quietly lowered her eyes, looking at the pages of the book in her hands, her whole being enveloped in this tranquil and warm halo.
If it weren't for the "kidnapper," Chen Mu would probably think it was like a beautiful oil painting.
"Did the sun rise in the west?"
Chen Mu was indeed surprised. Based on his usual observations, Lin Chaojing usually slept in late and had a hard time getting up in the morning. Sometimes, he even had to knock on the door to remind him before the guy would lift his pajamas and groggily move out, not caring how much skin he was showing.
How could such a lazybones get up so early?
"Don't we have school today?"
"It's the weekend today." She kept her eyes on the book, not looking over, and gave a reply that was neither loud nor soft.
So that's how it is. Chen Mu realized that he had been out of touch with society and work for too long and had lost the concept of weekends.
He should have said "okay" and then gone to the kitchen to make breakfast.
But for some reason, at that moment, Chen Mu suddenly felt curious.
He became curious about the book.
I remember when I met Lin Chaojing, she was also carrying this book as she walked down the street, and if I remember correctly, the cover was the same.
"What are you looking at?"
"It's no use showing it to you."
Lin Chaojing finally raised her eyes, and under the sunlight, her pupils seemed to be surrounded by a pale golden halo.
But what surprised Chen Mu even more than that was the title of the book!
Methods to Draw Magic from Light
"I wasn't mistaken, it's extracurricular reading, right? It has absolutely nothing to do with studying..."
Lin Chaojing's voice lingered in my ears, seemingly fading into the distance:
"Would you like to take a look?"
Perhaps because Chen Mu was male and could not become a magical girl, she did not deliberately hide it at the time, but just treated it as a casual chat... that's all.
But at this moment, Chen Mu's pupils widened!
He slammed on the brakes.
