Chapter 20 The Pursuer
Chapter 20 The Pursuer
"Thump!"
A muffled thud.
Lin Xiu's eyelids twitched involuntarily, and he saw that the man's face was deeply sunken, as if Brother Donkey had kicked a deep pit into it.
He was sent flying backward, rolled several times on the ground, his head lolled to one side, and he remained motionless.
As expected of Brother Donkey!
Lin Xiu couldn't help but sigh.
Brother Donkey's kickstands are always reliable and trustworthy.
"Shh-"
"Shh-"
"Shh-"
The whistles continued to sound.
But those nearby have already stopped.
Lin Xiu turned his head and saw that someone had already collapsed next to Yao Rongrong.
Therefore, it seems that only these two people are tracking us here.
The distant whistles were still approaching, and the encirclement had been fully formed.
Neither of them dared to delay.
Yao Rongrong picked up a dagger, a bow, and several arrows from the corpse and quickly walked over.
Lin Xiu picked up the "hook-and-sickle spear" that had almost broken the donkey's hoof from the ground.
The shaft of the gun is made of wood, with only the blade at the tip made of iron. Therefore, although it has some weight in the hand, it is not so heavy that it is impossible to lift.
Especially now that Lin Xiu has been learning cultivation methods from Yao Rongrong for two days and has taken two pills, his strength has improved considerably, so wielding this weapon is no problem at all.
He pulled the knife from the ground, sheathed it, and, holding the "hook-and-sickle spear" in his hand, said to Yao Rongrong, "Judging from this, it's not going to be easy to escape."
Running away in a panic can easily put you in a passive position and waste your energy.
"Let's leave the donkey cart here and get out of here quickly. Let's see if we can hide nearby. We'll decide whether to stay put or launch a surprise attack later."
"Yes, sir, you are right."
Yao Rongrong nodded, then asked, "Does this archer know how to use a bow and arrow?"
Lin Xiu said, "How would I, a mere storyteller, know these things?"
"Um."
Yao Rongrong nodded and said, "Then let's just throw these arrows by hand."
But she didn't throw the bow away; instead, she carried it on her back.
Weapons are obviously not something we can leave for the pursuers; it's best to keep them with us.
Other things, however, are inconvenient to carry.
Lin Xiu unloaded all the supplies that Donkey Brother was carrying and threw them onto the donkey cart. The two men and the donkey quickly walked away and went to a slightly higher place nearby with bushes for cover, where they hid as much as possible.
Brother Donkey seemed to know that the situation was tense. He was protected by Lin Xiu and Yao Rongrong on the left and right sides, and he kept his head down silently without making a sound.
"Shh-"
"Shh-"
A short while later, a whistle sounded nearby.
Lin Xiu and Yao Rongrong saw two people walk out: a middle-aged woman and a young man, both with menacing expressions and gloomy eyes.
When the two men saw the donkey cart, they did not go over immediately. Instead, they carefully bent down, looked around cautiously, and remained vigilant.
Yao Rongrong held an arrow in her hand, intending to take this opportunity to shoot it, but seeing their steady steps and alertness, she knew that a single blow would not be enough to kill them, so she did not act immediately.
—Of course, this was mainly because other whistles came closer, and then someone appeared.
The timing of this move was really difficult to grasp.
"How is the situation?"
The newcomer was an old man with graying hair and a messy beard, but he looked very energetic and was no ordinary person.
The other frowned and asked, "Did the person escape?"
The middle-aged woman, one of the first two to arrive, said, "The person must have run away, leaving behind all their belongings."
"Ah! There are corpses here, our men!"
The young man discovered the man on the ground who had been kicked to death by the donkey.
The other three hurried over and took a look.
—Thinking that they had carefully observed their surroundings and found no one, they assumed the enemy had left, and the four of them were no longer as alert as when they first arrived.
The middle-aged woman gasped when she saw the dead man's face, saying, "That guy who ran away wasn't someone to be trifled with. His face was dented from the punch; that must have been a really hard blow!"
"..."
Lin Xiu, hiding in the shadows, was speechless.
Didn't you see the donkey cart? You saw the cart but didn't realize there were animals on it? What terrible reasoning skills!
Yao Rongrong couldn't help but smile and gently touched the donkey's neck with her delicate hand.
Although the donkey didn't bray, it shook its head, its mane twitching with a hint of smugness.
The vigorous old man said in a deep voice, "Have the brothers gather their forces and continue the pursuit. No matter how powerful the person is, they must be killed."
Otherwise, if they escape, how can we stay peacefully in our good place?
The middle-aged woman said, "But looking at the road earlier, the person from last night has already been killed. The people who escaped here should not be with the two from last night."
The vigorous old man said, "So what if we're not in cahoots? Although the man who escaped last night was killed, there's no guarantee he won't leak our information."
Or even if that person didn't say anything, wouldn't others guess from his severely injured appearance that someone was lurking nearby?
In this day and age, having your whereabouts known is not a good thing.
The middle-aged woman nodded when she heard the old man say this, and said, "That's true, better safe than sorry."
"Liangjia Village is doing so well; if our secret of hiding in the mountains every day gets discovered, we won't be able to hunt anymore."
Lin Xiu's eyelids twitched; he had already understood what was being said in those few words.
The village I saw yesterday is called Liangjia Village.
This group of people occupied the mountain next to Liangjia Village, pretending that the village was an abandoned and uninhabited village. They also specially maintained some intact houses to attract people to stay there.
Anyone who stays here overnight will be at their mercy at night.
"Shh-"
The young man moved his lips and pulled out a bark whistle from his mouth. He puffed out his cheeks, and the whistle made a sound.
Then, a sound came from afar.
The sounds didn't get any closer; instead, they gathered in twos and threes and then dispersed in other directions.
It seems they can communicate through this whistle, which is quite a skill.
Meanwhile, the people in the distance also received instructions and gathered together, forming groups of several to search for Lin Xiu and Yao Rongrong.
After the whistle signaled the message, the four people in front of them did not leave immediately.
They had a clear division of labor: two people would check the supplies on the flatbed truck, while two people would look for footprints on the ground.
"There are two sets of bedding in this car, and there are at most two of them."
"That's what the young man who inspected the donkey cart said."
The sprightly old man bent down, searching the ground for traces, his movements never ceasing, as he said, "It's better to be cautious. Don't make hasty judgments or guesses. What if there are more than just two people?"
The person next to him suddenly said, "Found them! There are definitely two people!"
The ground was covered with weeds and vines, making it difficult to leave footprints. Lin Xiu and Yao Rongrong also tried to be as quiet as possible to avoid leaving any traces on the ground.
But this is, after all, a mountainous area with no brick roads, so no matter what, some traces of it are still inevitable.
What the person found were just a few tiny, shallow footprints, separated by a small distance. An ordinary person without search experience probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
This person must have hunted and killed many animals to be able to identify the footprints.
