Chapter 142 Waaaaah, Wife, don't leave me!
Su Wanwan was looking down and eating her porridge, so she didn't see it.
After a while, Lin Weiwei's fingers curled very gently in Bai Si'an's palm.
Bai Si'an suddenly woke up with a start.
He raised his head, his eyes still bloodshot, and looked at Lin Weiwei.
Lin Weiwei's eyelids trembled, and she slowly opened them.
Her eyes were initially blank as she stared at the ceiling, blinked, and then slowly turned toward the bedside.
She saw Bai Si'an.
Bai Si'an opened his mouth, wanting to speak, but his throat felt like it was blocked by something, and he couldn't make a sound.
He just stared at her, his eyes unblinking, as if afraid that if he blinked, she would close her eyes again.
Lin Weiwei stared at him for a while before her gaze slowly focused. She saw his disheveled appearance: his hair was a mess, there were ash marks on his face, his eyes were frighteningly red, and there was a bluish stubble on his chin.
Her lips moved, her voice soft and hoarse, almost inaudible: "Bai Si'an... how... have you become so ugly..."
Bai Si'an's tears streamed down her face.
He didn't say a word, but tears started falling, big drops rolling down his cheeks.
Lin Weiwei stared at him crying, stunned for a moment, then tugged at the corners of her mouth, wanting to laugh, but she didn't have the strength, only revealing a very faint curve.
"Why are you crying..." Her voice was still hoarse, "I'm not dead yet..."
Bai Si'an shook his head, unable to speak, only crying.
Hearing the noise, Su Wanwan quickly put down her bowl and came over: "Weiwei! You're awake!"
Lin Weiwei turned to look at her, blinking, "Wanwan... you're here too..."
"How are you feeling? Does it hurt?" Su Wanwan bent down and asked softly.
"My back... hurts..." Lin frowned slightly. "My arms hurt too... my throat hurts too..."
Every time she uttered the word "pain," Bai Si'an's face paled a little more.
"I'll go get the doctor!" Su Wanwan turned and ran out.
Only the two of them remained in the ward.
Lin Weiwei looked at Bai Si'an, who was still crying, his tears never stopping.
She tried to lift her uninjured hand, but she didn't have the strength.
"Don't cry..." she said, "Your crying...makes it hurt even more..."
Bai Si'an quickly wiped his face, but tears still welled up.
Lin Weiwei looked at him and suddenly said, "Bai Si'an... my hand is numb..."
Bai Si'an was startled and looked down at his hand holding hers. He had been holding it too tightly for too long.
He quickly released his grip, but his hand remained suspended there, hesitant to let go completely.
Lin Weiwei twitched her fingers; they were indeed numb, like being pricked with needles. But she didn't pull her hand back; she just left it there.
She looked at Bai Si'an for a long time, then slowly raised her movable hand and very slowly reached out towards his face.
Bai Si'an didn't move, he just looked at her.
Her hand finally touched his face; her fingers were icy cold as she gently wiped away the tear stains on his face.
"The usually... aloof and cool technician Bai..." Her voice was as soft as a feather, "How did she become... a little crybaby..."
Bai Si'an grabbed her hand and pressed it against his face. His hand was trembling.
"Lin Weiwei..." he finally spoke, his voice hoarse, "You scared me to death..."
"What's there to be afraid of..." Lin Weiwei smirked. "I'm lucky to be alive..."
The doctor and nurses followed Su Wanwan in. The doctor examined Lin Weiwei and asked her questions, which she answered softly.
After the examination, the doctor said, "It's good that you're awake. The injury on your back needs time to heal; don't put pressure on it or let it get wet. Don't exert yourself on the wound on your arm. Your throat was irritated by the smoke, so drink plenty of water and talk as little as possible."
Lin Weiwei nodded.
The doctor looked at Bai Si'an again: "Technician Bai, you need to go back to bed too. You have a rib injury, you can't sit like this."
Bai Si'an shook his head: "I'm right here."
"Si'an," Su Wanwan advised him, "Weiwei is awake, you have to listen to the doctor. If you're like this, Weiwei will have to worry about you."
Bai Si'an glanced at Lin Weiwei.
Lin Weiwei was looking at him, her eyes filled with a hint of helplessness.
He gritted his teeth and finally stood up. A sharp pain shot through his chest, but he endured it and slowly moved back to his bed.
The nurse adjusted his bed position so he could lie down in a semi-reclined position.
The two beds were placed side by side, with a distance of more than a meter between them. Bai Si'an could see Lin Weiwei by turning his head to the side.
Lin Weiwei also turned her head to look at him.
The two of them just looked at each other.
Su Wanwan looked at this and then at that, feeling relieved but also a little amused.
After the doctors and nurses left, the ward became quiet again.
The sunlight streamed in completely, making the room bright and airy.
Lin Weiwei suddenly said, "Bai Si'an... I'm hungry..."
Bai Si'an immediately sat up, but his movements were too fast, which aggravated his wound, and he groaned.
"Slow down!" Su Wanwan quickly said.
Bai Si'an ignored it and looked at the bowl of porridge on the bedside table that had gone cold: "The porridge is cold, I'll go heat it up."
"I'll go," Su Wanwan said, picking up the bowl. "You lie down."
She took the porridge out.
The two of them were left alone in the room again.
Lin Weiwei looked at Bai Si'an. His eyes were still red, and the tear stains on his face had dried, leaving several marks.
"You really cried..." she whispered.
Bai Si'an didn't say anything, just looked at her.
"I dreamt..." Lin Weiwei said slowly, "I dreamt that you were in a dark cave... I called you, but you didn't answer... so I went inside... and walked for a long time..."
Baisian's Adam's apple bobbed.
"Later... I saw light..." Lin Weiwei continued, "and then I woke up."
Bai Si'an took a deep breath and then slowly exhaled.
"Lin Weiwei," he said, "don't do that again."
"What?"
"Don't rush in," Bai Si'an said in a low voice. "Don't take such a big risk for me."
Lin Weiwei looked at him for a long time.
"What if I...really try it next time?" she said.
Bai Si'an stopped talking and just looked at her with a deep gaze.
Lin Weiwei twitched the corner of her mouth: "Just kidding... It hurt so much... Next time... I'd rather die than do it again..."
Bai Si'an remained silent.
Su Wanwan brought in a bowl of warmed porridge, and there was another bowl of fresh porridge.
She placed Lin Weiwei's bowl on the bedside table, helped her slowly turn to the side, and fed her spoonful by spoonful.
Lin Weiwei ate very slowly, frowning with each swallow, her back aching.
She ate about half a bowl, then shook her head: "I can't eat anymore...it hurts..."
Su Wanwan put down the bowl and wiped her mouth.
Su Wanwan handed Bai Si'an the porridge. He took it and finished it in a few mouthfuls.
After finishing his meal, he put down his bowl and looked at Lin Weiwei again.
Lin Weiwei lay face down, her face turned to him, her eyes half-open and half-closed, as if she was sleepy again.
"Go back to sleep for a while," Su Wanwan said softly. "I just woke up and I don't have enough energy."
Lin Weiwei hummed in agreement and closed her eyes.
But she didn't fall asleep immediately. She felt Bai Si'an's gaze fixed on her face.
She closed her eyes and suddenly said, "Bai Si'an..."
"Um?"
"Your beard...you need to shave it...it's prickly..."
Bai Si'an paused for a moment, then raised his hand to touch his chin. Indeed, the stubble was quite stiff.
"Okay," he said, "I'll shave tomorrow."
Lin Weiwei stopped speaking, and her breathing gradually calmed down.
Su Wanwan sat in the chair, looking at the two people, and the tension that had been building up in her heart for several days finally eased.
She quietly walked out of the ward and closed the door.
In the corridor, Bai Rongbei stood by the window, looking outside.
Su Wanwan walked over.
"Weiwei is awake," she said.
Bai Rongbei turned his head: "Yes, the doctor told me."
"Si'an is eating now," Su Wanwan said, "but he's still staring at Weiwei without blinking."
Bai Rongbei's lips twitched, as if he wanted to laugh, but he didn't.
"As for Li Jianguo," he said, "the investigation team has classified it as a serious accident due to negligence. His escape exacerbated the consequences. He's unlikely to receive any merit for his actions, but disciplinary action is certain."
Su Wanwan nodded: "Then Wang Xiuying..."
"Her?" Bai Rongbei's tone was very indifferent. "She was jumping around trying to exonerate Li Jianguo, and was warned by the investigation team."
Su Wanwan didn't ask any more questions.
The two remained silent for a while.
"Go back and get some rest," Bai Rongbei said. "You've been up all night."
"And what about you?"
"I'll keep an eye on things here," Bai Rongbei said. "There's nothing much going on in the regiment today, so I took the day off."
Su Wanwan was indeed tired, but she shook her head: "I'll stay with you."
