Chapter 1978 The path you choose is your own!
Li Hao sought shelter from the sun under a tree.
The military police of the Shanghai West Detachment knew he was Cheng Qianfan's driver, so they didn't drive him away. One of the military police just came over and warned him not to wander around.
He lit a cigarette and stood under the tree, slowly smoking it while casually looking around.
Just then, a man wearing a military cap but with a white coat over it was seen carrying a medicine box and running past quickly with two military police officers.
Li Hao's heart stirred.
However, noticing the watchful gazes of military police not far away, he found a brick to place on the ground, then sat down and leaned against a tree to doze off.
……
"Mr. Cheng, the former Central District was originally the most important political center of the French Concession." Yokoyama Akima saw Cheng Qianfan out of the office building and said as they walked, "This place is extremely important, and it has great significance for Sino-Japanese friendship and the long-term stability of Shanghai."
"Major Yokoyama is absolutely right." Cheng Qianfan nodded with a smile. "Therefore, it is all the more necessary for our Special Police Department and the Military Police to cooperate sincerely and work together for the long-term stability of Shanghai and for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere."
"Excellent!" Yokoyama Akima clapped his hands and laughed. "With Cheng-san's words, I am reassured about the Special Police Unit's enhanced security measures."
“Of course, this requires Major Yokoyama’s full support for the work of the Special Police Department,” Cheng Qianfan said.
"Let's work together for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and for Japan-China friendship," said Akima Yokoyama, nodding slightly.
"Major Yokoyama, please wait a moment," Cheng Qianfan said. "Welcome, Major Yokoyama, to my Special Police Unit for guidance."
Akima Yokoyama smiled and waved his hand.
Watching Cheng Qianfan walk down the stairs, the smile on his face faded considerably.
……
"Brother Fan." When Li Hao saw Cheng Qianfan come out, he quickly got up, patted his butt, and jogged to the car, opening the back door.
"Let's go," Cheng Qianfan said as he got into the car.
He sat in the car, and as the car drove out of the compound of the Shanghai West Branch of the Military Police, he slightly lifted the curtain. Military police were busily going in and out on the steps.
Li Hao glanced at the rearview mirror and saw that Fan Ge had a serious expression.
"Brother Fan, was Yokoyama Akima's attitude really bad?" he asked.
Previously, Fan had contact with Yokoyama Akima, and Yokoyama Akima's attitude towards Fan was not very good.
“No, Yokoyama’s attitude is very good,” Cheng Qianfan said, shaking his head.
“Since your attitude is so good, then why…” Li Hao began, then suddenly stopped, because he remembered something Brother Fan had once said:
A dog that bites doesn't bark.
……
"Could it be that Yokoyama is trying to lull you into a false sense of security, Brother Fan?" Li Hao asked.
“Your statement itself is problematic.” Cheng Qianfan rolled down the car window, threw the cigarette butt out, then rolled the window back up and said, “What do you mean by ‘paralyzing’? Only if Yokoyama already considers me an enemy, and a significant one at that, would he think of ‘paralyzing’ me.”
"Then why did he do that?" Li Hao asked.
“Yokoyama knows I’m Japanese; it must have been Sagami Umezumi who told him,” Cheng Qianfan said.
“However, Haozi, perhaps what you just said isn’t entirely without merit,” he said to Li Hao, suddenly frowning.
He didn't explain anything further, and although Li Hao was curious, he didn't ask any more questions.
Cheng Qianfan rubbed his chin.
It is indeed possible that Yokoyama Akima was trying to lull him into a false sense of security, or perhaps using the word 'lull' is not entirely accurate, but there was definitely some element of lull.
He understood the meaning behind Yokoyama Akima's friendly attitude:
I know your empire has its own people now.
However, it's important to note that this is the meaning Yokoyama Akima wanted to convey, but he didn't explicitly state it. What Yokoyama was trying to do was convey this unspoken understanding.
This is the most interesting part. If he thinks that Yokoyama Akima is willing to coexist peacefully with him, or even befriend him, and therefore lowers his guard against Yokoyama Akima, then he would be making a big mistake.
Cheng Qianfan shook his head, deciding to stop thinking about it.
He felt he had a natural advantage over Yokoyama Akima in the potential open or covert struggles between them:
No matter how much Akima Yokoyama tries to "numb" Kentaro Miyazaki, Cheng Qianfan will not fall for it.
……
"Brother Fan, I just saw a military doctor running by in a hurry in the yard," Li Hao said.
"Are you rushing to treat prisoners?" Cheng Qianfan asked.
"I think so," Li Hao nodded and said.
"Which direction did they go?" Cheng Qianfan suddenly asked.
"The back of the south side of the courtyard," Li Hao said.
"That's pretty much it," Cheng Qianfan said. "There's a warehouse over there, quite large, with a basement. It's probably been converted into a torture chamber by the enemy."
"Why is Brother Fan suddenly so interested in the Shanghai West Military Police?" Li Hao asked casually.
“Hattori Shinji clearly has ill intentions. If we want to control Hattori Shinji, we can make a move here with Yokoyama Akima.” Cheng Qianfan gave Li Hao a deep look at the back of his head and said calmly.
……
"Brother Fan, what do you think the prisoners that the Japanese military doctor rushed to the interrogation room to treat might be from?" Li Hao asked.
“It’s hard to guess.” Cheng Qianfan shook his head. “The Shanghai branch was busted, many people were arrested, and quite a few went missing. It’s possible they are brothers from the Shanghai branch…”
He pondered for a moment and said, "Of course, it could also be someone from the Central Bureau of Investigation and Statistics, or someone from the Red Party. Right now, I have no intelligence to support me in making a more accurate judgment."
Then, Cheng Qianfan asked Li Hao, "What do you think?"
“I don’t think it’s the Red Party,” Li Hao said.
"Oh? Tell me your reasons." A strange look flashed across Cheng Qianfan's eyes as he asked with a smile.
“It was just a gut feeling.” Li Hao chuckled and said, “I heard that this Yokoyama Akima is very good at dealing with our Military Intelligence Bureau. Judging from the anxious look on the faces of the military doctor and the military police, the prisoner is very important, so I felt that he might be one of our people.”
……
“Intuition,” Cheng Qianfan said, lighting a cigarette. In the flickering light of the lighter, his gaze as he looked at the back of Li Hao’s head seemed to gleam. “Intuition is very important to us, but sometimes it can easily lead to habitual thinking and cause confusion.”
"What do you mean?" Li Hao asked instinctively.
“Sometimes intuition is right, and sometimes it’s wrong, which can easily lead to being misled,” Cheng Qianfan said.
"Then how should we choose?" Li Hao scratched his head and asked.
He honked his horn, signaling the bodyguard vehicles leading the way to maintain a safe distance.
“Of course, when there’s no evidence or intelligence to support your decision to make any further choices, then choose to trust your intuition,” Cheng Qianfan said. “And even when there is intelligence to support your decision, but you strongly lean towards your intuition…”
……
"Then what should we do?" Li Hao asked again.
"Trust your intuition." A faint smile appeared on Cheng Qianfan's lips. "At least, you chose this path yourself."
