Chapter 1297 - 1292: Genevieve Croft
All the way back, Nicholas Croft seemed to be talking to himself the whole time, because no matter what he said, Sophie Foster didn’t respond. She only lifted her hand, her slender finger pressing in the code. When he saw Sophie press the keypad, the corner of Nicholas Croft’s lips curved. Her face might have changed, her personality might be different too, but the one thing that hadn’t changed was her essence; no matter what she became, she was still his Lara.
Xiao Mei had long been waiting at the door. When she saw the two come in, she hurried over warmly, grabbing Sophie Foster’s hands, her eyes reddening as she pursed her lips. "Madam... you’re finally back," that one sentence wrapped up all her guilt and excitement.
Nicholas Croft had instructed Assistant Tang to get in touch with Xiao Mei and invite her back to continue taking care of his wife, and he had also briefly explained that in the car accident Sophie Foster’s face had been ruined, so she’d had to change to a new one.
Of course, he’d also reminded her of Sophie Foster’s current identity to the outside world: the President’s Goddaughter, Genevieve Croft.
Sophie Foster, for once, didn’t lose her temper and simply let Xiao Mei hold her hands and stare at her. Even though that cold little face showed no expression, Nicholas Croft knew she’d accepted having Xiao Mei continue to look after her.
"Xiao Mei, Miss is tired." Nicholas Croft spoke up to remind her. Only then did Xiao Mei snap out of it, releasing Sophie Foster’s hands to wipe at her tears, smiling as she said, "Look at my memory. Sir, Miss, come in quickly, I’ve already run the bath."
Nicholas Croft toed off his sneakers and changed into house slippers, then turned around and crouched in front of Sophie Foster to take off her sneakers and slip the slippers onto her feet.
Sophie Foster stood at the doorway, one hand braced on the cabinet, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings.
The place wasn’t decorated luxuriously at all; it looked like a girl’s apartment. The curtains in the living room were a dreamy pink, and the little ornaments on the sofa table and cabinets were all cartoon characters.
Nicholas Croft led Sophie Foster into the bedroom. A huge princess bed sat in the center, and, rather over the top, there was even an indoor hanging chair by the window with a small table beside it.
The rose-pink curtains were printed with tiny flowers, and the sheer layer outside added an even more dreamlike touch. A trace of lace trim was something girls could never really resist.
"Baby, do you like this new home?" Nicholas Croft asked gently. Sophie Foster turned her head; as their gazes met, she asked, still in that icy tone, "Why aren’t we going back to the villa?"
"Because Baby has a new identity now, so she should have a brand-new home too." Nicholas Croft answered naturally. For the past half year he hadn’t dared mention getting the marriage certificate with Hannah Hargrave, afraid it would upset her.
Sophie Foster said nothing more. She walked over to the hanging chair by the window, turned and sat down, her hands lightly holding both sides as she began to rock herself.
Seeing Sophie Foster behaving temporarily "normally," Nicholas Croft’s lips couldn’t help but curve into a faint smile.
They took a bath together, and by the time they were done, Xiao Mei had already finished cooking dinner and was setting out the bowls and chopsticks in the dining room. Seeing them come out, she smiled and said, "Sir, Miss, dinner’s ready."
Nicholas Croft pulled out a chair and sat with Sophie Foster at the table. Xiao Mei set out two place settings, and after serving the rice she headed back toward the kitchen.
Sophie Foster didn’t rush to eat. She looked at her coolly and asked, "Why aren’t you eating?"
Xiao Mei...
She froze for a moment. In the past, Sir and Madam had treated the housekeepers very well and would eat together with them, but now... she suddenly felt a bit ill at ease.
She glanced at Nicholas Croft, then looked back and smiled. "I’ll eat in a bit, there’s still some things to finish up in the kitchen."
"Sit down." Sophie Foster’s tone was cold and hard. Xiao Mei froze again, looking at Nicholas Croft in confusion.
